The metaverse is a virtual world that can be accessed through avatars. It is an idea originally conceived by Neal Stephenson in his novel “Snow Crash” and has been the subject of many other novels, movies, and games. Raph Koster, an industry veteran who was the lead designer on World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment, believes this new technology will change the way we interact with each other.
The playable worlds is a plan put forward by Raph Koster, the creator of Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. He wants to build a sandbox MMORPG on this tech, then open it all up so that anyone can use it.
If Raph Koster’s metaverse lecture left you even more perplexed than before, fear not: his new, more technical blog will further perplex you. He claims that Playable Worlds’ metaverse technology will make sharding, bespoke rulesets, dynamic content, and patching more simpler, reducing the complexity and expense of creating MMOs in the contemporary world.
He claims that “slow iteration” implies “fewer opportunities to fine-tune gameplay.” “It also implies increased expenses, which leads to a more conservative approach to game creation; higher costs make developers less willing to take chances. When we examine the history of games, we can observe that times of tremendous invention occur whenever prices decrease. Because cost constraints dropped, new experiences were created via flash games, smartphone games, and the availability of Unity and Unreal. MMOs, on the other hand, have not experienced this. If anything, the obstacles continue to rise.”
Playable Worlds’ goal, according to Koster, is to develop the technology, then use it to build his sandbox MMORPG. After that, the platform will be fleshed out for other purposes, such as modding or “networks of various games, not all produced by us.”
“Rather than asking you to create games for us, we’re creating a game with this technology for you,” he concludes. “However, it’s pointless to worry about it until you’ve made a fantastic game. All of this is meaningless unless the gamers are content. So that’s the first thing we’re working on. The goal is to provide a fantastic playing experience.”
Finally, we’d like to express our gratitude to Koster and his team for providing us with a 5-pixel tall picture to utilize; we’ve restored it to its former beauty and will continue to use it until we receive some proper screenshots. Here’s the first official photo!
Who else is sick of having to delete existing games to make room for a new installation?
