FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The New York Jets have seen an injured starter depart early for the locker room on each of their past three days on the field.
Mekhi Becton, a left lineman, was examined for a potential concussion during a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. Becton’s condition was not updated by the team.
On the fourth play of the first 11-on-11 session, Becton, who is listed as 6-foot-7 and 363 pounds, was involved in a head-to-head collision. He looked drowsy, walked to the sideline, and vomited. He went slowly to the changing room with a trainer a few minutes later.
The Jets have grown used to this after suffering two expensive injuries against the Green Bay Packers last week. After a day off, linebacker Jarrad Davis hurt his left ankle in the game and will be out for two months. Defensive end Carl Lawson sustained a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in a joint practice.
The Jets also lost defensive end Vinny Curry for the season, despite the fact that he never played for them.
Curry, who signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Jets in free agency, never practiced with them due to an unknown medical procedure he had in the summer.
Curry was put on the active/non-football injury list at the start of camp. Curry was anticipated to return in Week 2, according to Saleh. He was demoted to reserve/NFI on Tuesday, rendering him ineligible for 2021.
Curry, 33, had been expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Jets, with 32.5 career sacks. This, along with Lawson’s injury, makes them very vulnerable on defense.
Becton, who was selected 11th overall in 2020, is having a bad year in 2021 after a great debut season. He missed the summer workouts due to a plantar fasciitis foot ailment and struggled in pass protection throughout training camp, especially against Lawson.
Mike LaFleur, the offensive coordinator, chastised Becton this week, saying, “Mekhi is going through some difficulties at the moment. He is aware that he is not performing at his best.”
This reignited talk that Becton was out of shape, but coach Robert Saleh insisted that was not the case on Tuesday.
“His weight is excellent, and he’s in terrific shape,” Saleh added. “He’s all right.”
Becton has kept his weight a secret. The Jets haven’t either.

The Jets are switching to an outside-zone rushing approach under a new coaching staff, which requires agile offensive lineman. On the second level, they’re often needed to travel horizontally and build blocks.
“He’s in a totally different system now, not just in terms of the run game, but also in terms of protection,” Saleh remarked. “We’re pushing him to run off the ball and do things a little differently than he’s accustomed to, where he’s used to simply going in front of guys and mauling them.”
“This outside-zone strategy isn’t simply about mauling the person in front of you because you’re a large human. We’re attempting to extract his athleticism, which he has. There’s also a period of adjustment for him to go through.”
Becton established a name for himself as a rookie by pancakeing and tossing opponents, which made him a social media star. He also had some inconsistencies, finishing 49th out of 63 tackles in pass-block win rate, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
He played down his pass-protection problems in camp, praising Lawson as a standout pass rusher. “Iron sharpens iron,” Becton remarked of the struggles that made him a better player.
Becton expressed his approval of the proposed plan.
Last week, he remarked, “This is fun.” “Last year, we did a lot of drop-back passes and not enough rushing and set-up play-action. It’s a lot of pleasure for me.”
In other injury news, the Jets re-signed first-round guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (pectoral muscle) and second-round wide out Elijah Moore (quadriceps). Moore was hurt on Aug. 12 and Vera-Tucker was injured the first week of camp.
“It’s like Christmas,” Saleh said. “We got a few of people back.”
