England’s World Cup qualifying match with Hungary in Budapest descended into chaos as fans invaded the pitch and police clashed with supporters.

Hungarian fans clashed with security personnel and baton-wielding police inside Wembley Stadium during England’s 1-1 draw with Hungary in World Cup qualification on Tuesday.

Tensions rose before the game when Hungarian supporters booed England players for kneeling in solidarity of the anti-racism movement. A flag depicting a kneeling person crossed out was also raised by the fans.

After a handful of fans rushed up the concourse and stairs to fight with police and stewards, the tiny area of the stadium holding up to 1,000 Hungary supporters exploded in violence less than five minutes into the game.

Before a large throng rushed through a small tunnel onto the main concourse area, supporters were spotted throwing fists at cops.

Despite the fact that the chaos subsided within a minute, riot cops with body armour and visors returned to assist Wembley’s own stewarding crew.

The Metropolitan Police Service in London stated it had taken action after a steward was racially abused.

“Officers entered the stand shortly after the start of tonight’s play at Wembley to arrest a fan for a racially aggravated public order offence after remarks made towards a steward.”

“Minor disturbance erupted as the police conducted the arrest, including additional onlookers. Order was soon restored, and no additional instances have occurred as of yet.”

Following the uproar, Hungarian supporters let off a green flare after Roland Sallai’s penalty kick put the visitors ahead on 24 minutes.

The Football Association of England stated: “We are aware of an incident in the away section at Wembley Stadium during tonight’s FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifier. We will conduct an investigation and notify FIFA of the situation.”

Tyrone Mings flicked on a Phil Foden free kick, which was converted in by John Stones from close range in the 37th minute, bringing England level.

The remainder of the game went on without any more problems being recorded.

Hungary manager Marco Rossi declined to comment on the events after the game.

He added, “I don’t want to remark on this issue.” “It is not my responsibility. Everything I say may be construed in a variety of ways.”

The players, according to Mings, were unaffected by the pre-match jeering and the anti-kneeling sign.

“We’ve been chastised for taking the knee, but we’ve stood together fiercely,” the England defender added. “As a team, we’ve been able to rely on it. It makes no difference whether they wave flags or disagree.”

“If they were displaying those kinds of signals to what we believe in as a team, as a country, I haven’t got anything nice to say about them as fans, them as human beings,” Stones remarked, adding that he was unaware of the events.

“We appreciate everyone and believe we have a fantastic platform to express ourselves, which is exactly what we do before the game.”

“As a group, we’re a formidable force.”

The incidents on Tuesday will certainly lead to increased scrutiny of Hungarian fans and FIFA penalties. After disruptions during a game between the two teams in Budapest in September, the country’s national football organization was fined £158,000 and handed a stadium ban by football’s regulatory body.

Players were assaulted with items thrown from the fans during the match, and Black players in England’s team were racially abused.

UEFA fined the Hungarian Football Federation €100,000 and imposed a three-game stadium ban on the Hungarian Football Federation earlier this year for discriminatory behavior by supporters in Budapest during Euro 2020 games held at the Puskas Arena.

Following significant problems at the stadium before and during the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy, when hundreds of fans stormed barricades to gain access, Wembley’s capacity to manage supporters has been questioned.

Because it is their duty to guarantee safety at home stadiums during qualifying matches, England’s FA may be sanctioned for the flare on the field during Tuesday’s game.
