The Toronto Raptors traded DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard, Jakob Poeltl and a protected first-round pick. What grade would you give this trade?
The demar derozan trade was an extensive trade that involved the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. It was a blockbuster deal that sent DeMar Derozan to the Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, and Danny Green.
This summer, the Chicago Bulls have gone all-in and assembled a fantastic roster. To go along with Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, they’ve added Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and now DeMar DeRozan, previously of the Spurs.
The Bulls now have a squad capable of contending for a championship.
Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a 2025 first-round selection, a 2022 second-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick will be acquired by the Spurs. While it may not seem to be much for a player like DeRozan, who will join the Bulls, it was conceivable that they might lose him for nothing since he was a free agency. They currently have players whose contracts are coming to an end as well as draft capital.
Young, Aminu, the 2025 first-round pick, and the 2022 and 2025 seconds to San Antonio are included in the whole Bulls-Spurs sign-and-trade for DeMar DeRozan on a three-year, $85 million contract.

The ratings for the DeMar DeRozan trade between the Bulls and the Spurs are as follows.
Spurs of San Antonio: B+
Rather than risk losing DeRozan to the Bulls for nothing, the Spurs struck a good deal with a sign-and-trade agreement. They re-signed two good senior players who may be useful rotational players. Young and Aminu may potentially be traded to a contender before the trade deadline, allowing the Spurs to gain future assets.
Young averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game for the Bulls last season. These were strong statistics given his position, and he should fit in well with Gregg Popovich’s style.
Aminu, on the other hand, had a difficult season with the Bulls last year. He averaged 4.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 38.4% from the field. Next season, Aminu’s terrible shooting statistics will have to improve.
Despite his poor shooting splits, he is a strong defender. Next season, Aminu will still be able to contribute for the Spurs.
The Spurs made some intriguing free agency choices in their quest to return to the playoffs. They went out and inked three-year contracts with Zach Collins and Doug McDermott. These transactions were unexpected, but they provide the Spurs with much-needed wing depth.
The Spurs still have a lot of work to do in the summer, but their sign-and-trade with the Bulls was a solid move.
A+ for the Chicago Bulls.
The Bulls looked to be a postseason club, but not a contender, after their first-day acquisitions. The Bulls then came out and completed the DeRozan trade, establishing themselves as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
They now have a point guard in Ball, an All-Star in LaVine, a 4-time All-Star in DeRozan, and a 4-time All-Star in Vucevic on their roster. Teams will find it difficult to compete with these four, but they must now focus on establishing synergy.
Adding Caruso was a good start, but if they want to beat the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, they’ll need to do more. There is still a sizable portion of the youthful core that will complement the new arrivals well. The roster is well-balanced, with plenty of bench depth.
Bulls supporters should expect an entertaining season as their club is poised to reach the playoffs. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2017, but that will change shortly. Bulls supporters haven’t witnessed a title since 1998, when they were led by Michael Jordan, an all-time great.
Both of these droughts may come to an end in the next seasons, thanks to the roster’s depth. After a strong offseason, the Bulls should be a genuine contender in the Eastern Conference.
